BeLonging - the program
The exhibition BeLonging: Michael Rakowitz and the Mesopotamian Collection explores the notions of belonging and longing of both people and objects as they move and are moved from one place to another. It reflects on cultural loss and continuity, on art and cultural heritage, on displacement and repatriation. Through displaced objects from ancient Mesopotamia – now in Medelhavsmuseet’s collection – we familiarize ourselves with ancient places and people. Meanwhile, internationally acclaimed artist Michael Rakowitz shines light on the tense relationship between the Global West and the Middle East. He strives to complicate the current narrative around cultural heritage and ongoing forces of colonization, as well as colonial and postcolonial discourses. Together, Rakowitz’s work and the Mesopotamian objects create an intriguing interplay, in which exhibited artworks and displaced objects add meaning to each other.
